Top 5 Social Media News
News #1 – Facebook releases details about its new digital currency, Libra and digital wallet
Last week Facebook released details about its new digital currency.
Calibra is the name given to the newly formed subsidiary of Facebook that will offer these financial services. And Libra is the name of the new digital currency. Facebook calls it the “global currency powered by blockchain technology“.
Initially, Calibra will offer a digital wallet which will be available inside Messenger, WhatsApp and as a standalone app.
They expect to launch it as soon as 2020.
The interesting thing is: this Libra network or Libra Association, which is behind Calibra and Libra, is not just Facebook. It also includes big names like Mastercard, Visa, Paypal, and many other big names that you will immediately recognize if you go to their website, Libra.org. So check it out.
It seems to be something that is much bigger than Facebook and involves multiple big companies. So this could be something that we need to watch out for definitely in the future, when it comes to digital payments and the way this digital payment ecosystem is going to evolve, in the days to come.
News #2 – WhatsApp improves the PIP, Picture-in-Picture functionality within the app
WhatsApp seems to be rolling out an improvement to its functionality called PIP picture-in-picture mode.
Picture-in-picture is a feature where you watch a video on WhatsApp and then when you try scrolling through the chat while you’re watching the video pops out and continues playing.
So you can see both the video and the chat messages, and you can kind of do both.
Now what they’re doing is with PIP 2.0, they are improving its functionality in such a way that even if you leave WhatsApp and go to another app and do other things on your phone, the video will continue to play.
As long as you keep WhatsApp open in the background, that will happen.
This is something as content creators, it’s interesting for us because this means that if you as a ministry or a nonprofit, create good videos with interesting content, people will continue to watch it even if they have to do other things on their phone, they can keep hearing that message. So keep that in mind as a content creator.
News #3 – Linkedin lets you tag people on photos and send video messages.
Last week Linkedin announced a series of new features including the ability for you to tag someone when you’re uploading a photo on Linkedin, and also the ability for you to send a video when you’re messaging someone.
Linkedin has been releasing a lot of new features in recent days. And if you as a leader are using Linkedin to connect with other leaders or even within your organization, then you may want to check out these new features.
News #4 – Snapchat releases Gen-Z related reports that indicate mindset shifts
Snapchat has recently released two reports related to Generation Z (want to learn who the Gen Z are? Click here.).
These reports contain very interesting insights into how the younger generation thinks because this is a generation that has grown up in a digital society right from day one.
So it’s important as a ministry for us to understand how their mind works.
For example, this report has one finding in which, they were asked, the 13 to 22-year-olds, were asked to develop a slogan.
And most of them developed something that was around the theme of “Being Yourself“. They came up with slogans like, ‘Do your thing’, ‘Be Yourself‘, ‘Do what you want‘ kind of themes.
Things like these give us an insight into the way the younger generation is thinking so that we can minister to them in a very relevant way.
News #5 – Tesla might support YouTube videos in the car screen
Youtube might soon be available inside the big screens of Tesla cars.
Tesla is an innovative company that has disrupted the automobile space, as many of you may already know.
Tesla has announced that it might support Youtube very soon.
Of course, the company has clarified that you will not be able to watch Youtube videos as you are driving. It will work only when you’re in a ‘park’ mode.
But still, this is an indication of how social media is getting integrated into the products and other things that we use on a daily basis.
When you create content, keep that in mind. Your content can reach people in pretty much almost all situations of life. That is how integrated the digital world is becoming.
