This week, we have news about European AI Law, Meta, ChatGPT, X, Google.

🗞️ News 1: The European Parliament Approves the World’s 1st Comprehensive AI Act

In what could be a significant milestone in the evolution of AI industry, MEPs – Members of European Parliament approved the ‘AI Act’ of European Union. BBC calls this act “the World’s first comprehensive framework for constraining the risks of AI, artificial intelligence”. Other countries like China have had some AI laws, US president Joe Biden announced an executive order a while ago, but none of the countries have had a comprehensive AI law that focuses on the risk. The way this AI act will work is by analyzing the risk or harm that any AI company or tool will pose to the society. Higher the risk, higher the constraint. The article also says that legal advisors in European Union are already getting calls from companies to help them understand the framework. If you operate in the European Union as a nonprofit, church or ministry, then pass this information on to your team.

🗞️ News 2: Meta Releases New AI-Powered eCommerce Ads & Optimization Tools

Meta released new optimization tools and ad formats inside their advantage suite. Whenever you see the name Advantage or Advantage+ in Meta, note that this is about AI automating things for you. This is going to be the way advertising is done on social media in the days to come. First big part of this announcement is the ‘Advantage+ Creative Optimizations’. Meta says “you can automatically optimize video ads for viewing on Reels or the mobile Facebook and Instagram apps with 9:16 ratio”. Now when you upload videos for ads on Meta, it can not only make your video fit into a 9:16 frame, but actually optimize it using AI. The other big news in this announcement is the Advantage Plus Catalog Ads. Submit dynamic videos and demo videos, and Meta AI will automatically pick up these videos and show it to people who are likely to respond to these ads.

🗞️ News 3: Inflection AI Launches 2.5 Model with More Capability & Less Computing

Inflection AI announced the release of their next 2.5 model that will compete with the ChatGPT-4, but has high efficiency requiring 40% less compute to train. In today’s AI space, the word energy efficiency is important and significant because there was a recent article about how OpenAI consumes 17000 times the amount of electricity (daily) compared to an average US household. So even though this model does not beat ChatGPT, the big thing that is getting attention is the efficiency with which this happens. If you want to check out this new AI model, you can use their chatbot, which is called Pi on your mobile device or your browser. If you’re wondering who Inflection AI is, this is a company that’s backed by big names like Mustafa Suleyman, who was the co-founder of DeepMind, and also Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn.

🗞️ News 4: Google Business Listings will Now Display Your Social Media Posts

Next time someone googles your organization name, they will not only see your social media profiles, but they may also see your social media posts. The latest post that you have might appear right there as a carousel. This significant information was quietly added to the FAQ section of Google businesses help article. The FAQ is, “Why does my social media post show on my business profile?” And the answer says “Business profiles with an associated Social media link may find their social media posts surfaced on their business profile automatically”!! As of now doesn’t look like you can decide which post show up. Google is going to pull it up for you. And this is probably a feature that’s being rolled out. So if you don’t see it when you search for your organization name, just wait for it. And all of this is part of Google Business listing. So if you as a nonprofit, church or ministry have not taken a deeper look at how your organization is listed then this is a good time for you to review all that information.

🗞️ News 5: X Launches ‘Articles’, the Long-Form Blog Content Option for Premium+

X launched a new feature called ‘Articles’ which is basically long-form content like blog posts. This feature is currently available only to Premium+ subscribers or verified organizations. The announcement says “you can create your articles by just clicking on the ‘Article’ option, and start writing your content ,and formatting it with bold, italics, strike-through and all of it. You can also add videos and images”. Once you finish ‘creation’, the announcement says that you can ‘publish’ it and the article will appear on your profile in a new ‘Articles’ tab, and in your followers timeline, just like regular X posts. So X will promote it to your followers. Could be helpful if your audience are on X platform because any long form content with the video and an image option means that you can convey longer messages and deeper messages. Today with AI and ChatGPT, creating written content or long form content is not a big problem.
